What you can see in the city
While you are in the city you could visit such attractions as the Sydney Opera House which is perhaps the most recognisable buildings in the country and indeed the world. The Opera House has five venues, including the Concert Hall which has 2,679 seats and it contains the Sydney Opera House Grand Organ, the largest mechanical tracker action organ in the world with over 10,000 pipes.

Located close by is Sydney Harbour Bridge which is another very recognisable landmark. The bridge carries rail, vehicular and foot traffic from the Sydney CBD and North Sydney. It is the world's widest long-span bridge and it's the tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres from top to water level. It is also the fourth-longest spanning-arch bridge in the world. If you want to climb over the arch you can do so with BridgeClimb or fly over it with Red Baron Adventures.

The rest of Darling Harbour also has lots to offer an exploring tourist including a range of activities, restaurants, museums and shopping facilities. During the day you can have a look through the Australian National Maritime Museum, or the Sydney Aquarium. There is also the Chinese Garden of Friendship and the Powerhouse Museum. Also located close to the Harbour Bridge is Luna Park, a theme park which has a large Ferris wheel that offers marvellous views over the rest of the city.

Another point of interest is the Sydney Tower, the tallest structure in the city and allows you to literally walk over the city on the transparent floor of the Skywalk. The tower also includes a buffet, cafe and a restaurant.

In the last year of the millennium, Sydney hosted the Olympic Games. The 2000 Olympics offered the city a magnificent chance to present itself on the world stage. You can still visit the Sydney Olympic Park where you will find parklands and sporting facilities. A particularly fun area includes the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, which has been converted from an Olympic aquatic centre to a family friendly waterpark.

Other aquatic activities you can avail of in the fabulous host of beaches in the nearby area. There are about 50 beaches in the immediate Sydney area and the most famous of these include Coogee Beach, Manly Beach and Bondi Beach with its own resident "caveman".

What's to see in the Sydney Area? Where do you start?
There is just so much to see with your car hire in the Sydney area.

Take the short journey to Fox Studios Australia which is about 4kms south east of Sydney city centre. This studio has produced such movies as The Matrix Trilogy (with the urban scenes filmed in Sydney), Moulin Rouge!, Star Wars Episodes 2 & 3, Superman Returns and is currently producing X -Men Origins: Wolverine.

Located about 80kms from the city is the Blue Mountains National Park. Despite the name you won't find too many mountains here in this 2,482 km² park; the park is in fact situated on a raised plateau that is criss-crossed by river valleys that have cut their way though the land. While here, you can go bushwalking and do a little sightseeing. Also in the Blue Mountains area is the Jenolan Caves. Here are 10 caves here that are open to the public through guided tours.

Located to the west of the Blue Mountains is the town of Lithgow, which is about 140 kms from Sydney. Here you will find the Zig Zag Railway which was the old way of getting down the mountain sides before they made tunnels, and the railways are now a tourist attraction. Other attractions include the Glow Worm Tunnel, Secret Creek Sanctuary and Glen Davis in the Capertee Valley, the second largest canyon in the world. There is also the Royal National Park which is located about 30kms to the south of Sydney. It is the second oldest national park in the world and is home to a number of native animals such as the Kangaroos, Wallabies, Goannas, Lyrebirds and many more.

Two other national parks worth visiting if you have the time include Wollemi National Park and Kanangra Boyd National Park. Wollemi National Park is located about 100kms NW of Sydney and Kanangra Boyd National Park is situated 180 kms west of the city. Both parks are excellent places to do some bushwalking and some sight seeing.

With some of the finest weather in the world found in Australia, it's no wonder that it has become a major player in the wine market. In New South Wales the wineries can be found in the Hunter Valley. The wineries part of the valley has become a popular tourist destination and can be found about 160kms from Sydney. The main wines produced in the area include Shiraz and Semillon as well as extensive plantings of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and small quantities of Pinot Noir.

Wollongong is a nice city to visit for is excellent beaches and surfing spots. The city is unusual due to its geography which has lead to the city being 40kms long but only 6kms across! You will find the city located about 80kms south of Sydney along a beautiful coastal road. While in this city you can take a look at the Science Centre and Planetarium, popular with kiddies; Minnamurra Rainforest, ain the Budderoo National Park, near Jamberoo; and the Nan Tien Temple which is the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere.
