 Sydney Tour Guide

Sydney is considered Australia's most expensive city but there are a great range of things to do here that won't blow the budget. In fact, the cosmopolitan vibe and clean beaches are a great draw for backpackers staying in cheap hostels.

Attractions
There are numerous attractions in Sydney that can be experienced without spending too much money. Government House is a beautiful official building within which the machinations of government occur. Those who wish to get closer to Sydney flora and fauna can take a stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens. This year the gardens celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species. A walkway connects the gardens to Circular Quay where the throng of activity in Sydney Harbor is concentrated. Travelers can catch a ferry from here or just spend time watching the people come and go.

A stroll in this direction also leads travelers to the iconic Sydney Opera House, which, along with the nearby Sydney Harbor Bridge, is recognized the world over as a symbol of Australia.

At the foot of the Sydney Harbor Bridge travelers will find The Rocks, which is a vibrant port community and is the oldest part of Australia. The Darling Harbor is also worth visiting to see the Chinese Gardens, Sydney Wildlife World and the Aboriginal Center.

Culture
The city has an abundance of attractions for the 'culture vulture' on a budget. The Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Australian National Maritime Museum are both free to enter, as is the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Festivals are also a permanent fixture of Sydney life. Whether it is the month-long Mardi Gras festival in February and March or a celebration of music, arts and horticulture, every month of the year promises an outdoor event. Theaters and cinemas are plentiful and offer a variety of entertainment. The Old Fitzroy Theater in Woolloomooloo presents alternative shows to an audience with urban tastes at reasonable prices. The majority of cinemas, such as Campbelltown's Dumaresq Street Cinemas, offer discounts on Tuesday screenings.

Going Out
The diversity of immigrant communities in Sydney has led to the prevalence of international cuisine. Dining out offers an array of choice and backpackers should investigate areas in which the popular hostels in Sydney are concentrated, as well as Chinatown and the Sussex Center Food Court for cheap meals. The Pyrmont's Sydney Fish Market offers a full seafood experience and there are also plenty of free wine tasting opportunities available.

Travelers looking for cheap pubs, cafes and restaurants should head for Balmain and Leichhardt. Kings Cross and Oxford Street are nightlife hotspots as are Bondi, Manly, Cronulla and Parramatta. And for the ultimate outdoor experience in Sydney - head for the beach!
