Spread over an acre of 3.86 square kilometres towards the southern part of Sydney, it is most widely visited wildlife sanctuaries of the country. Towra Point Nature Reserve is located on the southern shores of Botany Bay at Kurnell, which invariably falls within the Sutherland Shire. Over the last few years because of the presence of unique natural features, Towra Point Nature Reserve has been declared a wetland. This place has now accuquired the distinction of being one of the world’s most important wetland reservation parks of the world and it serves as prime source of national significance.

Towra Point Nature Reserve in Sydney houses Towra Point Aquatic Nature Reserve located in midst of the grand waterways. However before embarking on the varied aspects of Towra Point Nature Reserve, it’s important to dwell on its historic details. Facts indicate that Kurnell was occupied by the Dharawal tribes in the ancient times. It’s believed that Captain Cook demarcated the Botany Bay in the year 1770, including Towra Point. Some historians believe that Europeans in the earlier era ran horses and went for cattle farming on Towra Point.

In 1861, Thomas Holt took the initiative of dividing Towra Point, into different areas out of which some areas were exclusively devoted for sheep grazing while other part of the land was extensively used for varied agricultural activity such as corn. Towards the later part of 1870, Thomas Holt began oyster cultivation at Weeney Bay in Towra Point. Since then Sydney Towra Point Nature Reserve has become the hub of many endangered animal and plant species. Some of the major Attractions at Towra Point Nature Reserve include the presence of different varieties of bird species such as Yellow Thornbill, Brown Thornbill, Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, Brown Gerygone, Dollarbird, Australian Raven, Shining Bronze-Cuckoo, Leaden Flycatcher and Spangled Drongo. Thus, these are some of the important features of Towra Point Nature Reserve.
